TUESDAY 3/2/99: G&K INDEX CLOSES AT 104.70, DOWN 2.4%

The big losers today were intc (-7 1/4, -6.2%), txn (-5 3/4, -6.2%), and amzn (-11 11/16, -8.8%), while athm made a big move forward (+8 7/16, 7.9%).

The big boys are shaking the trees, and the small investors are dropping like ripe fruit into their baskets.

A close friend called me to let me know his investment advisor is recommending he sell all of his Blue Chip high tech issues (csco, msft, intc, dell) and put the proceeds into a "hedge fund". When I looked it over, the hedge fund was really a limited partnership specializing in pork bellies, energy, oil, etc., and it had a 4% front end load. This fund has underperformed the s&p every year for the last 10 years. I screamed at him, and told him the investment advice he was getting from this jerk, at a cost of 1% of his portfolio annually, was going to bankrupt him.

I'm sure no one on this board will panic over a little obvious manipulation.
