And water is water: it can wash us clean, put out fires, quench our thirst, and drown us. Faith is as much a "substance" as water, and the use we put it to is largely our choice. It's making a decision, a choice, a commitment of faith in something, anything, that people fear so. And that fear keeps them planted squarely on the ground while their wings atrophy and wither. I'd rather be Icarus dying for a dream, than die an old man who lived a "safe" life. "Safe" doesn't move humanity forward, it leads to decline.
