Hewlett-Packard Donates NT$20M for Deep Sub-Micron Lab

March 3, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. said it will donate
NT$20 million to support Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research
Institute's deep sub-micron processing and testing laboratory.
The investment will help develop Taiwan's deep sub-micron technology to
the advanced level of 0.25 micron and below.

HP has also sent six engineers from its Singapore and Japan branches to
help with the project.

Huang Chun-liang, general manager of HP's electronic equipment
department in Taiwan, said his company is willing to assist in the industrial
upgrading efforts of Taiwan. As soon as Taiwan's manufacturers begin to
produce chips with deep sub-micron technology, he explained, there will be
strong demand for HP's electronic testing and processing equipment. Huang
stressed that HP's donation is strictly a contribution, which means that the
company shares no commercial interest in the project.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has allocated more than NT$2 billion for
the deep sub-micron project. Fourteen local high-tech companies have been
working on the project to develop 0.13-0.18 micron processing technology.
They plan to commercialize the technology in the future.
