"The Intel Pentium III 450 is currently very overrated and overhyped compared to the performance it delivers. It can barely outrun a Celeron 433 CPU (March 15th introduction, btw) without apps that feature SSE support, while costing $300 more than the new "low-end" CPU.
That being said, the SSE instructions are indeed a positive point of progress, and if these are the small steps Intel is required to take before unleashing Coppermine on the world, then we can all be patient just a little while longer.
Sharky's official recommendation is to save your money and wait for the real Pentium III to show up in July/August of this year. Make due with a $95 Celeron 366 in the mean time if you absolutely must upgrade."

Too bad Sharky will have to restate his official recommendation because Camino is DELAYED.

Click here for the full review, including some benchmarks which show the PII 450 being faster than the PIII 450.

Jim,

I've seen K6-IIIs for sale but haven't seen any of the P-III-550s yet that Intel announced on Feb 26. Have you?

Didn't Intel show those PIII 550s off in a "technology demonstration" recently?
