Hold on there, don't go start spreading ludicrous rumors now.Are a you a short?

Stock bull: hold on there a minute, nobody is going to give away the store, are you kiddin' me.Yes I read the article all the guy said was Dell has the proprietary BTO model to offer in return and he said nothing about implementing it for IBM or any other Ms,he said no such thing. It didn't sound like DELL is going to implement their BTO model for IBM,I think what he meant was IBM makes the products and Dell will market them through their enviable BTO model that is the size of it,so don't go start spreading any rumors now.

If you believe on top of buying IBM's product for $16 Billion and thus becoming the largest OEM customer that DELL is going to give away the store (meaning BTO),then I got this bridge for sale.<g>

<<<John, Dell is going to help IBM implement the Bto process. <eom>

Stock Bull, you are misunderstanding the partnership. It makes no sense for IBM to implement its own BTO process. Why would IBM spend millions and millions of dollars to restructure their manufacturing and countless millions in marketing.

IMHO do not be surprised if DELL will be building IBM's computers in the not too distant future.

Stock Bull, you feared that Dell is going to help IBM implement the Bto process.

So what? If you recall, just a few days ago Gerstner said IBM was not about to jettison intermediate distribution channels.

So here's a rather radical idea: IBM's version of BTO is geared to Dell. Suppose we're talking about mass storage, where IBM is the component manufacturer. IBM does not currently have a lot of JIT knowhow, so it is afraid of getting jugged up with inventory given the fact that JIT processes tend to move inventory storage upstream. Therefore, for this model to work both companies need to have as seamless an integration of manufacturing and distribution systems as possible.

In other words: virtual integration.

That can only happen if IBM's systems become responsive to demand. Hence, BTO capability. And if this works it is in both companies' interests.
