What can I say...I briefly reported to Lew in the '85-86 timeframe. I never could figure out how he became CEO of HP except that he was about the only viable internal candidate after Hackborn turned it down. Lew is an administrator...not an inspiring leader or visionary. He was very fortunate to ride Hackborn's success in printers in his first few years as CEO but has done little to ensure a growing and profitable future for the company. Unfortunately, he has now run out of luck and has also driven away much of the management talent beneath him (Belluzzo, Roelandts, and many others) that actually understood the computer business. Now I suspect the board will go outside which is probably a very good thing!
