"Stein has been CEO since before VLSI went public in 1983 at $13 a share"

If Philips gives 'em $ 17 a share 15 1/2 years later in 1999, this translates into an annualized compounded return of 1.75 % per year, making it one of the worst investments ever for a long term stockholder! A low IQ grandma from Alaska or Antartica with no knowledge of investment could go to her streetcorner Bank and get a better return from a money market account. Philips is robbing everyone cheap!
