05 March 1999

Shi Cuiming, chairman of Hong Kong-listed China Telecom
(H.K.) Ltd., will be transferred to the firm's main competitor,
China Unicom, the Apple Daily newspaper reported, citing the
nation's Ministry of Information Industry. China also plans to
transfer two senior ministry officials to Unicom. China will also
complete the division of the China Telecom Group, the nation's
dominant phone company and parent of China Telecom (H.K.),
into four separate entities for paging, fixed-line, mobile and
satellite services within the year, the paper said.

China wants to strengthen the competitiveness of its two
telecom operators, China Telecom and China Unicom, before the
nation opens its telecom market to foreign competition.
