Thank you for a very thoughtful posting. I think that the jokes that bother us the most--and are sometimes "tasteless"--are the ones that remind us how close we all are to the brink. I am thinking in particular of the jokes immediately following the Challenger explosion. They were awful and they were marvelously Freudian. At its best, taste should only indicate, where humor is concerned, a thought of the potential audience.
