What speed is your processor? Upgrading to Win98 on anything less than a P166 will slow your computer down 50%+++.

I just deleted Win98 of my P120 Notebook and installed Win95, way faster!!!!!

Win98 sucks.

I don't know if Cheeky Kid is right about 98 being slower -- could well be on a slow processor, but I also believe it requires more RAM to run than 95. Being short on RAM could probably also give you the perception of slowness. They are both things to consider and ask your tech.

As for saving your favorites and emails that is nothing to worry about -- just let your tech know you want them.

You might also check the price difference for adding 64 or 128MB of RAM instead of just 32MB. You never have enough.

Also, a new version of 98 is coming out soon so you might want to wait for that (if it isn't already out).

You might also want to ask for an extra partition on your disk -- it can be helpful for backup if Windows gets corrupted, and there's really no drawbacks to it.

Re: Upgrade

Hi Norman,

Personally, I would not recommend upgrading to Windows 98 if you already have Windows 95 installed. Unless you're having problems with your current OS, leave it as is. ...If it ain't broke...don't fix it!

The tech is right though, it's always best to install an OS from scratch then upgrade, not always necessary, but still a good idea.

If you do choose to format the drive and install Windows 98, it's no problem to save your data files for Office 97. Same goes for the Internet preferences and bookmarks/favorites. Outlook express can be a little tricky, but can still be done. Make sure the tech knows how to do it before you give him the system.

The RAM upgrade is a very good idea. You can _NEVER_ have too much and the move to 64Mg can boost performance quite nicely.

Good luck,

Richard

Now that I think about it, you may not be able to buy the new version of win98, since it might be oem only -- I think that is what is meant by OSR2: OEM Service Release 2. Anybody confirm that?
