"[T]he HFC model that could deliver high speed Internet, video on demand, and Internet access is pretty much dead for now...Cable MODEMs are doing very well however..."

I was under the impression that upgrading to HFC was NECESSARY step for MSO to offer fast internet cable modem service. Am I wrong here? Is HFC only necessary for 2-way (fast return path) service? Aren't Roadrunner, @Home, and Adelphia cable modem services all based on HFC architecture?

Jan,

>> the HFC model that could deliver high speed Internet, video on
demand, and Internet access is pretty much dead for now.<<

I believe that you are referring to the other model (not HFC), which was Switched Digital Video, or SDV.

SDV was another approach that has, for all intents and purposes, been abandoned. HFC is actually the platform that supports the cable modem which you acknowledged was working okay.

>Pacific Bell is trying to forget that they once thought that HFC was "the answer."<

That's a somewhat incongruous statement, IMO. Pacbell's abandonment of the HFC model signaled their retreat from cable TV in general, at the time, and had to do with factors which were outside those related to HFC's basic integrity. I don't like telling this story second hand. Is there a Ray Jensen in the house? Maybe someone closer to that situation like Ray [ot Tim] can elaborate on why PB decided to take a powder.

"As far as I can tell the HFC model that could deliver high speed Internet, video on demand, and Internet access is pretty much dead for now."

jan,
I'm a little confused regarding your comment. Because if I'm not mistaken, just about everyone on this thread has been very excited about HFC. AT&T was excited enough to spend $48 billion on TCI. Gates invested some $4 billion in Comcast. Paul Allen some $8 billion in numerous MSOs, etc.

Maybe you are confusing it with the strictly coaxial MSO plant? That is falling by the wayside. Maybe that is what you meant to say?
Thanks,
