Tyco Submarine Systems and Cisco Systems Deliver IP Transport

over Transoceanic Space

Non-Regenerated IP Transmission Demonstrated over Transoceanic
Distances

with the Cisco 12000 Gigabit Switch Router

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd.
(TSSL) and Cisco Systems today announced the first demonstration of IP
packet transport over a transoceanic non-regenerated DWDM system. This
was completed without the need for traditional TDM equipment and was
conducted at the new TSSL Labs in Eatontown, New Jersey. Successful
IP-dense WDM transmission was deployed by connecting Cisco 12000
Gigabit Switch Routers with interface cards operating at STM-16c rates
directly to TSSL's 7500 kilometer transoceanic dense WDM testbed using
only optical amplifiers.

This TSSL and Cisco demonstration marks the latest advancement in
undersea network communication. The feasibility of direct IP over WDM
packet transmission around the globe via transoceanic cable is a significant
milestone in telecommunications and signals the continued evolution towards
IP based networks for voice and data. The direct connection of IP routers at
data rates of 2.5Gbit/s and above enables a significant cost/performance
improvement for service providers deploying new world transoceanic
networks. Whereas traditional approaches have used an intermediate SDH
system limiting the maximum IP data rate to 155Mbit/s, this new approach
permits the IP routers to exploit the full capacity provided by the undersea
DWDM system and removes from the IP network the additional cost and
complexity of TDM infrastructure.

"This successful demonstration of transoceanic IP/DWDM transport further
supports the widespread applicability of optical internetworking solutions for
new world network architectures," said Graeme Fraser, vice president and
general manager of the Optical Internetworking Business Unit at Cisco
Systems. "The same compelling performance and economic advantages that
have been proven in terrestial IP backbones can now be applied to the
transoceanic space. Today, we have demonstrated that it is possible to build
a global IP network in which the entire system operates at 2.5Gbit/s".
Confirming this message, TSSL's Vice President and Chief Technology
Officer, Peter Runge stated, "this demonstration has major ramifications and
opportunities for the continued development of global telecommunication
networks based on the power of the Internet."

So I guess ol' whatshisface is Persona non grata now?

I got a sort of perverse pleasure in reading the inane blitherer pratter on and on. I think I was reminded of myself circa pre-adolescence (although I tried to never consciously offend or insult someone because of their race).

He strayed over the line and I'm glad to see him suffer the repercussions.
