Dell Offers Small and Medium Business Customers Remote Access Capability On PowerEdge Servers ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 1999--Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL), the No. 2 server vendor in the United States and No. 4 worldwide(1), today announced new features for its workgroup and departmental PowerEdge(R) servers that enable small and medium businesses to connect employees to their corporate networks from remote locations. Customers who order Dell's new remote access server (RAS) PCI card with the PowerEdge 1300, 2300, 4300 or 4350 servers will have the ability to connect employees in diverse geographic locations to their corporate networks through direct dial telephone connections or the Internet. The server bundle, which will initially be offered in the United States, Canada and Europe, can also help smaller businesses save money by providing Internet access to their employees through a central server. Using this approach, companies would save the cost of paying for individual Internet accounts for each employee. "Dell's strong focus on small and medium-sized business customers was an important reason why we developed this product, with capabilities tailored for these companies' unique needs," said Russ Holt, vice president and general manager of departmental and workgroup servers for Dell's Enterprise Systems Group. "This new capability of our PowerEdge servers is ideal for remote sales teams, telecommuters, or branch offices." The RAS card is designed for use in a Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) environment and can be used with Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) and Dell NetWorks services to give small and medium-sized businesses a complete Internet-enabled office. SBS, combined with high-speed ISDN connections to the Internet, can provide businesses with instant access to customers, suppliers and remote workers via electronic mail, Web site hosting and Web access. Support for analog connections provides inbound and outbound fax services, and remote access for users with standard phone connections. An entry-level configuration for the new Dell PowerEdge 1300 workgroup server with a 450MHz Pentium(R) III processor, 4 GB(2) hard drive, 64 MB of RAM, a 10/100 network interface card, monitor, 4-port ISDN adapter and Windows NT 4.0 starts at $5,765. For the remote access capabilities, Dell will incorporate a PCI card from Brooktrout Technology, which provides up to four basic rate interface (BRI) ISDN lines. Each card can support up to eight concurrent connections and up to four cards can be used in each Dell PowerEdge server, providing up to 32 concurrent connections with a combined bandwidth of up 2.048 megabits per second. The server can automatically handle digital and analog incoming calls and faxes.
