Israeli port strike close to resolution -official

JERUSALEM, March 8 (Reuters) - A 10-day strike of Israel's ports appeared headed for resolution on Monday as the head of the Histadrut labour federation met striking employees and port managers to finalise an agreement, a Histadrut spokesman said.

''We hope it's almost over. Amir Peretz has brought the sides together so it looks like they are close,'' said spokesman Levi Morav referring to the Histadrut leader.

Israel Radio said workers had agreed to receive an advance to compensate them for salary erosion and to delay other issues.

Morav said workers were seeking an eight percent wage hike but management was only willing to boost salaries by five percent.

Dan Gillerman, president of the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said the federation would sue organisers of the strike which has caused losses to exporters of some 30 million shekels per day.

''Only a little more than a month ago, the customs workers strike ended, which cost 100 million shekels in damages. And now, during this critical time of recession and unemployment, the business sector has to contend with additional sanctions, this time by the port workers,'' Gillerman said in a statement.
