John,

I don't know if this is the source of the March 11 rumor but, on Friday March 5, Michael Murphy said on CNBC that he has heard from "his sources" that Intel has told customers that March 10 is the latest day that orders can be cancelled for this quarter and consequently, he inferred that on March 11, Intel would "know" if they were going to meet, beat or not beat previous guidance and that if they were going to warn, it wouldn't be until then. He never said, though, that he expected them to warn. In fact, I recall that he said that he has heard thru his channels that all is just fine.

Jerry,

Re: Level 1. Yes. Intel is buying them for about $48/share of Intel stock.

By the way, CNBC just interviewed Michael Murphy of the California
Technology Report (?) who said that everybody ought to buy Intel while
it's this much off it's high because it's going to 150 soon and 200 next
year. He sees NO slowdown evidence ANYWHERE he has checked. All
PC sales are strong. When confronted with a COMP USA
announcement today that sales have slowed somewhat, he said that
they are in the retail sales segment which only accounts for 10% of pc
sales worldwide and that any slowness is a regular post Christmas
slowdown that happens every year.

Murphy said that Intel has informed it's customers that if they want to
cancel any orders for this quarter, they have to do it by March 10, so on
March 11 Intel will know if they have to lower or "RAISE" their
guidance.

I liked what he said.

Barry

RE:"ALL: Can any of the folks on this thread find the original reference to
this March 11th rumor. I'm trying to figure out how/where it originally
appeared. If I remember correctly, this got started about a week ago.

Can anybody point me to a reference?"...

Seems like Intel is keeping you in the dark.
Here's a "rumor". OEMs are balking at the P-III because of the CPU-ID inside. Much of the public is wise to the P-III CPU-ID.
Add in the price cuts on the Celeron and it doesn't take a Genius to figure out Intel has sacrificed earnings and shareholder value this quarter.
Maybe the middle class Chinese will make up the slack. <G>

John -

Re: Rumor - "Intel is putting pressure on its sales force to book as many orders as possible by Thursday, March 11. If the company doesn't meet targets by then, the company will pre-announce"

From your 10K, Intel recognizes revenues when the product is shipped to the end consumer, not the box manufacturer. Thus, there would be little incentive for Intel's sales force to try to book orders from vendors that weren't supported by vendor sales.

This rumor seems highly suspicious, and likely didn't originate at Intel.
