She was a pretty, popular, happy and smart child who was afraid that she was not thin enough

Was it really that simple? I am always hearing about kids who were just perfect until drugs, or anorexia, or other such things came along and snapped them up. I've always suspected that in most of these cases there were serious problems beforehand. Maybe the only thing that was just fine was the mask she wore, and wearing the mask can be a huge strain.

I sometimes wonder about the plastic surgery. I can understand it, to some extent, in performers: personality does not mean much on TV, and their careers depend on adherence to fashion, no matter how bizarre. In real life, though, I have known many women of average face and figure who managed to be almost unbearably sexy, and to draw enough masculine attention to satisfy anyone, by virtue of the way they walked, their voices, their combinations of intellect, imagination, and humour. Anyone who thinks these things don't matter to men is hanging around with the wrong men. Why is it that so many women would rather buy a new pair of breasts than try to develop qualities that will serve them for their entire lives?

Perhaps because these things cannot be bought, and developing them is hard work?

All this talk of Pamela Anderson made me curious, so I looked her up. I have seen the pictures around, just never connected them with a name, always classified them as "generic blonde". The first thing that struck me was not the breasts but the lips. She looks like she's been sneaking out at night and sucking off the air hose at the local gas station. That cannot be natural, is it actually a fashion these days?

The world is a strange place. I'm glad I don't watch TV; sometimes ignorance really is bliss.
