I will not get into the intricacies of Central American policy with you. I will only note that, in view of the current situation in the region, the Reagan administration's policies seem to have worked reasonably well.

By the way, Senator Rudman is a windbag. Traditionally, presidents have had a substantial amount of leeway in the conduct of foreign policy, including the use of force. The constitutionality of the Boland Amendment was doubtful. And although the people have the right to be wrong, the reason that we are a representative rather than direct democracy is that we expect those who are in a position of authority to study matters and be directly responsible for decisions made on the basis of their best judgment, not opinion polls. The people have a right to call them to account through elections, and therefore can exert pressure prior to elections. But the people should not, and do not, expect them to adhere to every fleeting expression of public opinion. In fact, it is generally looked upon as a character flaw if a politician is too worried about polls.

You could not be more ridiculous if you tried. Not that you aren't trying. Your sophomoric platitudes distilled mean that Reagan should never have opposed the spread of the murderous totalitarian Left in Central America and fully repudiates 50+ years of American foreign policy in opposing totalitarianism. I guess the victory over Hitler is another "sin" that is yours. What a canard! You would also repudiate the Monroe Doctrine since we know the murderous Left in Central America was funded and directed from the Soviet Union. The elections in Nicaragua vindicated Reagan's successful policy, as had the elections in El Salvador. Your side lost big and Rudman, as a nominal Republican but genuine gasbag, looks especially stupid in retrospect. Thanks for highlighting that fact at least. Your real sin is stupidity and the inability to think in terms of reality and outcome. Many died fighting the totalitarian Left - that after all is the defining struggle of the 20th century. And thanks to leaders like Reagan, far fewer died than had the Left won. (Following the Soviet example, the holocaust in SE Asia is just a recent sample of what happens when the Left is not stopped. True to form, the Sandinistas had shown their intentions and had already tried to kill off most of the Miskito Indians). amazon.com
