John:
We all get caught when a news service misquotes. There have been a dozen in the last two weeks where a wire service article (or article written in response to a wire service comment) has proven to be inaccurate. Emachine sold 180,000 units during their first (Fall) quarter, if memory serves me well, so it is indeed not in the top 6 by a long shot. On the other hand, I read the "6th overall" comment in a wire piece myself.

Your comment about all of us being a bit more careful about our sources is a good one. I've been tripped up personally when I've come upon a piece that "confirms" what I've been seeing in the field. I pounce on it with a grin,.....THERE,....I KNEW I was right,.....finally the world is catching up to me (brilliant mind that I am). I chorkle as I punch it into my keyboard for my pals to see,....vindication is mine.

A while later,....OOOPS,....missed that little date, or that reference to units rather than revenues, or the reference to 1998, as opposed to 1999. And of course one's opponents, or pals delight in pointing out the flub. (and I don't blame them,....something satisfying about pointing out where someone makes a point with info that is mis-understood or mis-quoted. (g)

Best, Earlie

<<Gary- You really need to check your stats..>>

I agree. Which is why I said as much that I didn't recall with certainty.

Wish I could, but I don't recall details. I seem to recall that the 6th position was for PC shipments worldwide, but don't hold me to that.

So, looking back I can find this:

<<It seems like an unlikely story--a company, which was founded six months ago, with just six weeks of active sales, has managed to corner six percent of the personal computer market.

Yet eMachines Inc. has done exactly that.>>

Hmmm . . . possible I simply recalled the 6th position incorrectly when in fact the data was 6%. Anyone know where 6% places a company in this segment?

In any event, it would appear that since I requested not to be held to the recollection and that I couldn't recall the details, your comments would appear lack proportionality.

Ah, here it is:

zdinfobeads.com

eMachines, the low-price computer startup founded by Korean PC manufacturer, TriGem Computer, and monitor maker, Korea Data Systems, made its initial foray into the computer market in November and has quickly joined the ranks of the top computer makers after barely two months of sales. In November, eMachines first month in retail, the Fremont, California-based manufacturer accounted for 1.7% share of the US retail desktop market, but then catapulted to 5.9% share in December, typically the largest selling month of the year. With this current level of market share, eMachines has already moved up to the No. 6 position. This standing nearly equals Apple Computer's, which currently holds the No. 5 position with 6.3% market share

As I said, I didn't recall the details. It's #6 in the US retail desktop market.

John, Please note my original response to the 6th comment. I said more like 16th. However, they do expect to sell 1.8-2 million boxes this year, which would put them into the top ten. Gary is working off memory, as many of us do. He said he "thought" he read that it was 6th. That is a lot different from saying they are 6th and folding your arms and sticking out your chin. Your correction, if you have differing data or a different opinion, is fine. A sermon about quality control is boring and out of place. None of us are claiming that our statements are ex cathedra.
