Dear Earlie,

Just do what I do. Ignore the "real" facts! Stay with the old ones, even if they're wrong! Or say that it doesn't matter anyway! You have a reputation and an intellectual investment to maintain! I do it all the time, and I sleep fine!

Your pal,

Dan Niles

Earlie et al,

I looked to see if First Call earnings estimates were coming
down. Here are a few samples:

Feb Quarter 7-day ago Current Report Date
mean EPS est mean EPS est
NSM -.02 -.20 Thursday, March 11
ORCL .51 .29 Thursday, March 11
SLR .32 .27 Monday, March 15
JBL .33 .27 Tuesday, March 16

March Quarter
INTC 1.12 1.10
IBM 1.72 1.42
CPQ .40 .34
MOT .37 .24
NVLS .29 .25

April Quarter
AMAT .32 .26

I double-checked the ORCL number. It's even stranger when
juxtaposed with:

16:28 [ORCL] OPPENHEIMER FORECASTS ORACLE Q3 EARNINGS
IN-LINE AT 19 CENTS EPS.

Best regards, John.

Earlie, Gary....Sorry about that...I guess I am a little bored waiting around for the "non-announcement" from Intel/CPQ on Thursday/Friday....

(Not trying to incite a riot....I know you and others here think differently....but it doesn't add up to me that Intel is going to warn...therefore, tech, box makers, and the general market are going even higher short-term)

Earlie, you make good points...with which I agree....as I stated, I do enjoy perusing thru the debate here on the Burke thread...obviously a lot of smart, talented, and hopefully, as a result, wealthy individuals...but.....the Dell-head slamming has gotten a little thick lately...and my post to Gary is just to remind everyone that on most threads you will find the same: Some posters who are logical and provide data, and some that do not....and many somewhere in-between....This thread is no different...

Earlie, The worst one I saw was a couple of weeks ago when Reuters totally mangled a report on Dell and the pc industry by the Merrill analyst. They got all the numbers right; they just put them in the wrong context. For example, the analyst's prediction of how fast the market is growing in 1999 was reported as how fast it grew in 1998. And his prediction of unit sales growth was reported as revenue growth. But, if old coots like you and I who have been tracking this crap since the Earth was cooling can mess up numbers, think of how easy it is for a reporter who thinks the guy said eunuchs instead of units. <g>
