Today almost everyone knows that (a) only the big caps the internuts go up, (b) if you buy a fund it should be an index fund (mostly SPX) and (c) in the long run stocks beat all other investment vehicles.

I totally agree with your observation of this mature bull market and the cyclical pattern that have developed. Now, in the last 2 years or so, as soon as a bearish trend is entered, the small caps get killed first, and the large caps are always the first to recover (Oct '97, Sep '98). If it requires a bear market (prolonged or short) to get out of the pattern, then who can say when the bear market finally arrives, that the same pattern would not play out again, just at a larger scale?
