M2 PRESSWIRE-10 March 1999-SAFT: Saft launches a new environment friendly nickel-metal hydride battery in its Super High Power series (C)1994-99 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Paris -- Saft, Alcatel's battery division, is launching its latest battery in the Super High Power series, the VH Cs 3000, nickel-metal hydride cell. Designed for applications requiring fast charge and high discharge rates (40 A), the VH Cs 3000 cell is particulary well suited for applications in cordless power tools, such as cordless power drills. Its high capacity of 3 Ah makes it of equal interest for use in radio-control models -- racing cars, for example - - and portable medical equipment.

The VH Cs 3000 is well-positioned against its competitors thanks to its super high capacity, long life duration and good storage ability. Further advantages include providing high mid-discharge voltage and being environment-friendly when compared to nickel cadmium

The technology employed in the VH Cs 3000 involves a nickel foam-positive electrode, a metal hydride negative electrode and an alkaline electrolyte. The temperature range in discharge runs from -10C to +40C. The bare cell battery weight is 59g ; its length, 41mm; and diameter, 22mm.

The VH Cs cell was developed and designed at the Saft portable battery factory in Nersac, France. The cell will be produced at this site; the first cells will be available from the first half of 1999.
