All too often however, radical environmentalists are not as concerned about the environment as they are about expressing their resentment about some other issue. They see environmentalism as an acceptable channel through which to vent other feelings. Some who have no interest in functioning in the corporate or business world are embittered by this fact and by the success of their peers. Through environmentalist causes, they can lash back at those who have succeeded in these realms

That just about sums it up. All you have to do is look at what kind of car they drive to determine their real attitude toward enviromentalism.

If they drive a "beater", their attitudes generally reflect your astute assessment. If their driving their BMWs, Lexus', and Range Rovers, they generally are milking a paycheck out of their public character, while pursuing the lifestyle they publicly criticize others of leading.

Myself, I'm an environmental capitalist. I believe in the private solution rather than the public one. But I also believe in holding corporations liable for deliberate and reckless practices that lead to unecessary pollution.

Thank you for your well spoken comments.

Regards,

Ron

Philip,

From the tone of your post, I get the impression, that you can not
understand why all people are not interested or inclined to acquire
excessive material wealth in our society at the expense of the environment. So from that vein, I conclude that you think that those that want something else and can find fulfillment, and self esteem, in this case from the environment, and want to strongly protect it , are malcontents..

I don't think you understand... I can make the same statement about the exploiter..

An extreme capitalist with no other goals but to acquire wealth has gone to extremes throughout our US history
magnitudes more times than any extreme environmentalist ever has.

Witness the massacres at the labor strikes in the early 1900's

Tobacco companies and their denials and lies..

The dumping of toxics from smelters and other plants into our
rivers when they knew it was dangerous is extreme behavior..

And On and on...

The myriad of coverups of actions that they know are immoral
and illegal are EXTREME im opinion and are examples of malcontent capitalists out of control..

To set aside a few parks and places that we as people perceive
as beauty for our enjoyment only, is not conservation or environmentalism, It is a selfish and short term approach to a problem that threatens ALL LIFE, the destruction of our LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM.

My litmus test with environmental activists is to ask how they think we ought to generate electricity.

Coal = air pollution and strip mines
Oil = dependence on Bad Arabs, not great for the air, expensive
Nuclear = don't even think about it.
Hydroelectric = flooding beautiful river basins
Solar = Can't do it on a large enough scale - do we want to cover thousands of acres with panels?

And on, and on... the smart ones acknowledge that everything is a tradeoff, there are negatives to any method, and all we can do is seek balance and try to diminish environmental costs in each case.

The dumb ones try to change the subject, usually by going off on a rant.

The same applies for religionists, secular or not.
