Tony: In Canada, are there requirements that those in government who are involved with scientific issues have any background whatsoever in science? I don't think this is the case in the US either, so we rely on the EPA and FDA. It's a joke to get politicians involved in issues they cannot comprehend. Recently politicians tried to get involved on this very same rbST issue in the US, but it didn't go far.

Scientific decisions must not be political ones...remember what the Royal Society said.

(your message)
The Senate Committee on Agriculture is annoyed
over Health Canada's handling of the bovine growth hormone
called rbST. Now it wants a review of the department's drug
approval process.

Also, the statement from that aricle in itself is scientifically ridiculous. When did we establish that rbST "moves through the food chain", any more than the testosterone from a bulls balls does? Why make a random statement like that instead of one based on known principles of science?

(from the story)
although some consumer and health advocates worry it may
cause cancer or antibiotic resistance in humans as it moves
through the food chain
