Lynn: I had to chuckle. Your comment was so American! In the UK we are only just beginning, in a very small way, to behave like Americans in our consumer businesses. You notice it in the large public utility companies which are usually run by Americans or are based on American models. Only there do people give their names and so on and even call you by your first name. Otherwise it is all impersonal and a bit frosty.

I remember when I first went to Canada. Even though I was a relatively young man, I was slightly offended - in a stuffed shirt kind of way - to have the drug store assistant call out my first name when my prescription was ready.

But I got to like it. When relatives visited from England they would be amazed that people would go to the trouble of asking for and using their first names and bowled over by their kindness in wishing them "Have a nice day". They thought Canadians and Americans were so much more polite than the English.
