No, Bush and Dole are ahead of Gore on name recognition. Even conservative pundits have acknowledged that. Dole, I don't know but with Bush, he can rest on the fact that his dad was a good president at a time when republicans knew how to control their extreme factions. Just to take an overused example, Reagan and Bush addressed the abortion issue with something like, "its a personal choice, not my choice" - which is fine. This in contrast to the nuts we have today running the republican party in California where their entire reason for being is to overturn Roe v Wade. The republican party was fine in the early 90s and thats what Bush represents to people, and he is in fact a guy like that I believe, so hes ok. But say for example all the republicans had to offer was John McCain? Or another unknown candidate (unknown to the majority) - he would get creamed by Gore. Also, Bush or Dole will lose if they their advantage if they come out with a hard-right spin, or any extreme position on abortion. Gore isn't the best candidate, but hes ok. The republicans will lose big in the house and senate because there are no ex-presidents running.
