It is after all only the wicked nutcase NRA, not their beloved liberal constituency. You can always tell where they stand by paying attention to what they say after the word "but" at the very end of their story. Say they do a so-called sympathetic story about gun-owners. It ends with: "...but Sarah Brady says that there are too many guns on the street and vows to press congress for tougher gun laws." OK, so then they do a piece attacking gun owners (for the sake of balance, you know). It ends with: "... but a militant right-wing gun lobby can't stand up long to a barrage from Sarah Brady." You know the spin. ...By the way, Charlton Heston marched in civil rights demonstrations long before it was politically correct.
