I doubt Intel bought DEC's FAB because it is "like" Intel's.

The fact is Intel wanted StrongARM and DEC had a perfectly good FAB producing this chip without changing a thing, regardless how "like" or "unlike" an Intel FAB.

AMD on the other hand, produces a clone chip that Intel would not want to continue producing for any reason. They would be buying a FAB that would need to be converted, equipment liquidated, people to layoff - basically a headache more than a fire sale price on some equipment.
