Joe, One of the most important things to do to help a pup feel at home is to house train it starting as soon as you get him/her home. While they are small pups, puppies just can't hold their water for long periods of time. Little bladder=pee often, so you have to take them out often. When you first get a pup home do not correct it for making a mess, the puppy has enough stress being away from its litter mates and mother. All dogs ever want to do is fit into the pack, your family becomes the pack. The pup will learn soon enough that to pee or billy in the house is not what the pack likes or does. Dogs are not pigs, they don't want to pee where they live and they really don't want to drop one where they live. You can use this fact to quickly train a dog (there goes your sleep). First always take the pup outside after he eats. With puppies for the action of eating, there is a fairly quick reaction. So feed him and take him outside. Take him to the same spot and tell him what a good boy he is to "----", make up a word for it, the dog will learn the word. With both my dogs I tell them to take a "Billy" in honor of Mr. Morals. Likewise I can say "go pee" and they will do just that. The Old Yellow Dog must know at least 75 words, and he always knows when you are talking about him. If you have a place to keep the dog at night (closed in area) he will wake you up when he has to go billy but leave papers for a while. He doesn't want to do that where he lives so he will wake you. As he gets older his little body holds things longer so then you get to sleep all night again. If your pup is in your house and all the sudden starts sniffing around take him at once to the Billy spot. They will sniff before they pee or billy but, be quick when they start sniffing. Puppies grow quickly and so do their bladders so if you can stay sane, just smile when you step in puppy pee and say "this too shall pass", things should work out just fine. 909 BLUE
