Sun has always been vulnerable. But it retains a strong "sustainer" position in Internet servers, while pioneering disruptive software for cellphones, smartcards, appliances, settops and other smart boxes on the network edge. For the next five years, Internet servers will be an undershoot technology in Christensen's terms (the need for managing millions of hits, threads, queues, multimedia events, transactions with complete reliability). Thus Sun has time to develop revenues flows from the still embryonic Java/Jini side. Everywhere I go I encounter major new Java successes. But, of course, Sun's valuation depends massively on continued resourceful leadership from McNealy and Joy.
