I agree that the sanctions have failed, and that they have left the regime pretty much untouched, and hurt the populace. Sanctions are a traditional weapon short of war, but they presuppose a greater concern for the well- being of one's citizens (or subjects) than can be expected from someone like Saddam. I think it was an honest enough mistake, but the sanctions should have been revisited, and ultimately lifted, long ago. The absurd results have been a part of the public debate for some time.

Its a sorry tale that as long as France, Russia, and China are slavoring over oil contracts (which have already been signed) in Iraq, there will be no toppling Saddam. Why do the French, Russians, and Chinese always whine first about the US intervening in Iraq (aside from Russia's hurt ego)? They already have a vested interest in keeping Saddam in power and getting those sanctions lifted as quickly as possible. Saddam isnt a dumb guy, you think he made those deals out of financial self-interest?
