Telefonica will invest
US$ 1.8 billion in Brazil
Fernando Xavier Ferreira, president of Telesp Participacoes, informed that Spain's Telefonica plans to invest US$ 1.8 billion (R$ 3.5 billion) in its Brazilian subsidiaries throughout the year. Telesp Par, which will receive investments of US$ 1.3 billion (R$ 2.5 billion) is expected to install 2 million fixed telephony terminals during 1999. The target determined by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) for the period is of 1 million terminals. Tele Sudeste Celular, operator in Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo states, will receive investments of US$ 200 million (R$ 400 million). Ferreira participated in the 1st Executive Forum Mercosul-European Union, which took place at the Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio de Janeiro on February 22.
