JG, the HD is a mechanical device that produces electronic results. It's likely that the mechanical part is failing. The platters spin on shafts within bearings/bushings that wear-out or overheat and swell. This causes the disc rotation to stop.

The slam/hammer method sometimes shakes the frozen mechanics loose and, if you're lucky, you may be able to copy your files elsewhere before it freezes up again. I don't think Nemer meant for you to destroy the box, but to bang it hard on something solid.

I have a friend who disassembled the HD case, dripped a couple drops of sewing machine oil on the shaft retainer clips, banged the whole thing around, put it back together and reinstalled it. It worked great and he salvaged his data. He likes to say that the only reason he replaced it was because it filled up.( LOL, I'm not sure how much of that one I believe.)

If this doesn't work, you can still spend big bucks and recover the data unless the read/write heads impacted (i hate that word) the disc surface.

Good Luck, and keep us informed.

It does sound like your primary drive is kapoot.

I would remove the drive first..and get the machine working. Either buy a new drive and install an OS..or install the second drive as a primary and install an OS on it. If there is something on the second drive that you want to keep I would recommend buying a new drive.

Once you have the machine working you can work on recovering your data. Chances are as already indicated there is a problem with the mechanics. Either send the drive to a professional data recovery outfit or try it yourself. As indicated tapping the drive may work...it may also do more damage.
