your an idiot if you open the drive. there is nothing you can fix in it. If want your data. get out your wallet..... I can never understand why people refuse to backup their data. data recovery cost about $1000.

Don't open the drive, open the computer case!

The point is to identify the drive unambiguously, which
is not easy if there are several drives mounted next to
each other.

If you have the drive identified, that part's done.

I have had 3 or 4 WDC drives go bad with the symptoms you
mention. All but one had periods of operation after being
shut down completely (power removed) for a while.
