"For most of its turbulent 13-year history, Newbridge has been run by a group of managers with startlingly similar backgrounds. Many are English or Welsh and most worked with founder Terence Matthews at Kanata-based Mitel Corp. during the 1970s and early 1980s. The
business and social ties within this group run long and deep"

Mmmmh...Now I begin to see some of the reasons for NN's stumblings over the past years. I worked in Wales for a few years. The Welsh like to keep to themselves, and don't take kindly to outsiders meddling. It is a class system that has ruined the UK over the past 100 years. I'd boot them all out and recruit again....

Company Press Release

Newbridge Networks Announces Market Leadership
Position in Central and Eastern Europe

KANATA, ONTARIO--Newbridge Leads All Equipment Vendors in ATM and Frame Relay Markets, Secures Over $100 Million in Network Equipment Business

Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN - news; TSE: NNC - news) today announced that leading market research firm Dataquest, a Gartner Group company, has confirmed that Newbridge leads the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and frame relay wide area network (WAN) market in Centra l and Eastern Europe.

According to a recently released Dataquest report, Newbridge leads with a 46 percent market share in the ATM market and 28.8 percent market share in the frame relay market. Newbridge has also installed time division multiplexing (TDM) networks in every c ountry in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Company has won more than $100 million in business to supply ATM, TDM and frame relay networks to service providers in countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia and Hungary.

''Six years ago, the majority of Central and Eastern European countries lacked network infrastructures,'' said Chris Stomenov, Director, Central Europe, Newbridge Networks. ''In order to encourage foreign investment -- which is crucial to the economic growt h of these countries -- all privatized, or soon to be privatized carriers require a world-class networking infrastructure. This has resulted in significant investment in advanced networking solutions in this region.''

As a result of new competition in these markets from new generation service providers, some established telecommunications carriers have been losing market share. To remain competitive, they are turning to network equipment vendors, such as Newbridge, to create next-generation networks that support a wide range of value-added services.

''Newbridge continues to be awarded new business in Central and Eastern Europe to install the network infrastructures that service providers need to remain at the forefront of their markets,'' continued Mr. Stomenov. ''We are consistently beating the competition with excellent references from existing customers within the region. For example, our competitors cannot deliver the powerful end-to-end network and service management capabilities that we provide. The Newbridge name has become synonymous with the trusted solution of choice in this region."

In rapidly developing economies, such as those in Eastern and Central Europe, it is essential that government organizations and public and private enterprises be served by flexible, reliable data communications services that can quickly respond to customers' changing needs. This requires a networking infrastructure that provides flexible leased line services; consolidates existing services, such as X.25 and integrated services digital network (ISDN); and migrates to new services, such as frame relay and ATM. Newbridge is able to meet these requirements, offering an extensive range of integrated products and solutions to effectively meet each carrier's unique needs.

''Service providers in Central and Eastern Europe are developing more advanced networks than many of their Western European and North American counterparts,'' said Mr. Stomenov. ''They have built their infrastructures from scratch and hence do not have the migration and integration issues that often delay and complicate upgrades to existing technology."
