ZOYA,

>>>>> i was wondering what if most of those were written by investors(and not market makers, who may have even been the buyers of those calls)during the recent downturn, to get some premium against their long positions <<<<<<

I know a few brokers who have had tons of experience with options, some over 20 years and they all claim that it is the big boys who sell calls not the small trader. The one who has the most experience with options claims that of the options he trades for customers, less than 1 out of 10 is selling calls. I just checked with him after reading yr note, and he says no change. This broker is also the office manager for options of a major firm.
