I have been predicting this for a while.

LoD:

What is your prediction and the possibility of IBM/DELL merger?
When Michael was selling computers from his dorm, his objective was to compete against IBM. He has done that. He is at his pinnacle. Is not he a type "A" personality? After reaching the mountain top, what is his next challenge? You read that MCD is working on Venture Capital activity. That is a small potato. After being the best at PC, running the entire IBM is a challenge.

The article speculates that if there is a merger MCD will reporting to Lou and be annointed as heir to the top post. Right now MCD is probably the best CEO you can find. His ideas are revolutionary. Which textbook suggests that you give promotion by reducing your department? Only happens at Dell.

IBM is a stodgy company (even though Lou has somewhat loosen the collar) and trades at a "low" multiple. The company is not strong on internet. On the other hand Dell has $ 14M/day internet sales and growing, plus gigabuys. In a merger MCD would be an ousider to IBM, but so was Lou from RJR. Maybe from a merger, IBM would command a higher multiple. For Dell, bye bye NCR and here comes IBM at your doorstep for service!

The marriage of IBM with DELL might be as far fetch as one might think. Tax free exhange anyone? 2 shares of Dell for 1 share of IBM? With MCD at the IBM/DELL helm? I'll take it. For those who likes dividend (I don't), IBM pays dividend.

Paul.
