Hawkeye. I'm having trouble getting back to Calstart also. Went to my search engines and could not bring it up there either. They must be down. I think the article was positive, but can't remember the exact wording. Maybe someone else on the board will help us out, and make a connection. Jim

DaimlerChrysler set to unveil new fuel cell car

DETROIT, March 16 (Reuters) - DaimlerChrysler AG on Wednesday is scheduled to introduce the next generation of its fuel cell-powered passenger car, part of the race by automakers to develop a cleaner burning alternative to the internal combustion engine.

The company said the unveiling will be made in Washington D.C. by Juergen Schrempp and Robert Eaton, co-chairmen of the world's fifth largest automaker. DaimlerChrysler would not provide details about its future plans for the product prior to the announcement Wednesday.

Engines that use fuel cells are more environmentally friendly than traditional internal combustion engines that run on gasoline. Fuel cells convert hydrogen gas into electricity that powers the motor. The only exhaust is water vapor.

A previous version of the Daimler fuel cell vehicle, the A-Class small car-based NECAR 3, used liquid methanol as a fuel, which it converted into hydrogen gas that was processed in the fuel cell and turned into electrical energy.

The NECAR 3 has a range of 250 miles on a tank of methanol. DaimlerChrysler has said it wants to have a commercially viable fuel cell car by 2004. Fuel cell prototypes made to date by DaimlerChrysler and other automakers remain prohibitively expensive.

DaimlerChrysler is developing its fuel cell cars through a partnership with U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - news) and Ballard Power Systems Inc. (Toronto:BLD.TO - news), a Canadian firm. Together, the three have invested more than $700 million in the venture.

Other automakers are also developing fuel cell-powered vehicles, including the world's No. 1 automaker General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news), and Japan's No. 1 automaker Toyota Motor Corp .
