This is getting to be a very interesting but logical business case -
ASCEND bought Cascade for $3.5B (or thereabouts) and got Frame relay and the technology that resulted in the GBX-550 - the hottest selling ATM switch at present. The brains behind these products (i.e. Dan Smith and his chief technology guru) have subsequently sold all their Ascend positions and have started a new company. CIEN gets new gen ATM switching architecture that is particularly well suited for integration with DWDM plus the brains for one half billion. ASCEND parlayed their plan into a $20B buyout from LU because LU wanted to make sure they continued to supply AT&T and trump CSCO in the data networking market. It's beginning to look to me like CIEN is setting itself up for a must have by CSCO. Therefore, even though Omnia does not have a revenue stream, it has the technology and the brains and in view of the ASCEND moves it looks like a good deal. We shall see. I just added to my CIEN position.
