Men who tell themselves that they are "shy" are frequently just selfish and self-centered

I think not! I can only speak for myself, and from a lifetime of analyzing shyness (trying to overcome my own), but it seems to me being selfish and self-centered is more likely to be a trait of the overly-confident.

Shyness is often limited to initial contact with strangers and new situations, and I would not think it would continue very far into a relationship. As soon as "the ice is broken," I usually have no problem doing my part (and more) of carrying the "conversational/social weight."

Unwilling to Make An Effort. Crashing bores

Just the opposite. Those who do not suffer from shyness have no conception as to what a tremendous effort it can be for a shy person to communicate in a normal fashion. Once they do however, I believe you will find that they are just as interesting as the next person, if not more so.
