Very interesting. I certainly think "three miles farther down the road" is better than "three miles further..." but I also prefer "Nothing could be farther from the truth." It has a visuospatial punch--the sense of concrete distance--to it that further doesn't. Similarly, in speaking of a project to be completed, I would rather say "We are farther along now" than "We are further along now."
