>>Why is Sony news Important?<<

it was a total surprise. in fact some had been worried that we might lose nintendo. i can't see that happening now.

at the announcement, sony ceo declared sldram and ddrdram unstable = no competition for rambus. sldram consortium folded immediately after this. something has to be used for memory while the world prepares for rdram. sdram and ddrdram offer an interim, short-term, but much slower (than rdram) solution.

playstation sales for this year are projected at 23 million units and rising. that will be a lot of royalties for rambus once the switch to rdram is done.

sony and toshiba are spending $1 billion to construct a rambus rdram memory production facility.

sony makes many many more products that could use rdram. to name a few, dvd, hdtv, other video devices, computers, etc.. seems they must be moving that way (rdram) to justify the $1 billion expenditure. all will pay rambus royalties.

we are always emphasizing PC's and rdram here on the thread. sony confirms the rambus statement that 50% of revenues will come from non pc uses of rdram. also confirms ceo recent statement that several major design wins would be announced. wonder what else is coming. also confirms in my mind the matsushita ceo statement that they are developing several consumer products for rdram. wonder what surprises they have for us.

oh yes, the sony news is stupendous. let's all give milehigh a hand for finding it.
