I am sorry I did not make myself clear. The criminals I referred to in the final sentence of my previous post are precisely the ones that you have in mind. The worst kind of murderers.

If Hitler, to come back to his example, had been captured and emprisoned, and somehow had become able to understand the animal he had become (through talking to a Priest for example) , his understanding of how he became that animal, and his views on what society has to do to prevent these things from happening again, may have been beneficial to society.

You can certainly make the argument that what I am talking about is utopia, not practical, or even not moral.

I am not suggesting to be lenient with criminal or murderers. I am making the point that there are moral and philosophical considerations to be taken into account in the debate on the Death penalty, and that some of them can be used to make a strong case against it, like the Pope does for example.
