RB Travis Jervey signs with 49ers

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) -- The San Francisco 49ers today signed free agent running back Travis Jervey, who started five games for the Green Bay Packers last season after making the Pro Bowl as a special teams player in 1997.

Although terms were not disclosed, a team spokesman indicated Jervey signed a four-year deal. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported last week that Jervey had agreed to a four-year, $6 million contract, including a $1 million signing bonus.

In San Francisco, Jervey likely will be used as a third-down back and a backup to starter Garrison Hearst. Jervey also can be used as on special teams, possibly as a kickoff returner.

The Journal Sentinel said the Packers did not seriously pursue Jervey, who felt his best opportunity for playing time would be elsewhere.

Jervey replaced the injured Dorsey Levens in the starting lineup last season before breaking his left ankle in a November 9 loss at Pittsburgh, ending his season.

The 26-year-old Jervey rushed for 325 yards and a touchdown while averaging 3.9 yards per carry. In his fourth season out of The Citadel, he also had nine catches for 33 yards.

Jervey is the seventh Packers free agent to sign with another club, joining guard Adam Timmerman, nose tackle Bob Kuberski, punter Sean Landeta, linebacker Lamont Hollinquest, quarterback Doug Pederson and cornerback Rod Mullen.
