Michael Armstrong's efforts to turnaround the long-distance giant by awarding him a $1.9 million bonus for 1998, according to a proxy filing released by the SEC today. The bonus was in addition to the executive's $1.4 million salary in 1998. Under Armstrong's leadership, ATT met or exceeded its financial targets, including a 46% increase in EPS, revenue growth of 3.2% over 1997, and slashed SGA expenses by $1.6 billion. Since Oct. 1, 1997 through Dec. 31, 1998, ATT investors have realized a 68.9% return as the company's market value has increased by over of $58 billion. Armstrong received an option for 300,000 shares in January 1998, which becomes exercisable in 1999, 2000 and 2001. ATT's compensation committee also granted him 25,000 "performance shares" to be paid out at the end of three years if the company's total shareholder return is competitive with its peer group.
