<< The question is, why did they buy Genie to begin with? If they can't turn it around,
why would they waste that capital and wandering into an area of new territory that
they can't master?>>

Did you read the article to the end?

<<IDT hasn't done much since acquiring Genie in 1996. The text-based online service is still home to a small group of die-hard fans of its discussion groups, and Genie
continues to host a network of Brother word-processor users. An IDT spokeswoman said the Hackensack, N.J., company is planning to relaunch the service in the
next 30 to 45 days but won't disclose details.>>

Whats this about? Could it be promotion of the relaunch?
Go figure.

Cymeed

I am not sure whether or not buying Genie was a mistake or not. I don't know what they paid for it, what it came with that they are using elsewhere, how much money it is making, losing now, but I suspect it was a mistake because the company does not talk at all about it. It doesn't seem to be in their immediate plans or strategies.

But what I like about it, is their propensity to jump into internet related things. Even if they have made some mistakes, they have had some huge successes!! Net2Phone is HUGE!! IDT is now by far and away the IP telephony LEADER!! They got here by moving fast and jumping into the internet quicker than everybody else in the IP telephony area.

Howard Jonas took IDT from 11 million a year to 600 million. I've got confidence in these guys. They have a good record. If Wall Street is still behind on accounting for the obvious value of IDT, then to me it just says, "buying opportunity".

everyone must read this news:

08/28/96 - IDT announced this month that it has agreed to purchase the Genie Online Service from Yovelle Renaissance Corp for an undisclosed sum. Genie, formerly owned by General Electric, provides multi-player gaming, interactive chat, and bulletin board services to 20,000 customers in the United States. The deal gives Internet access and telephone service provider IDT rights to the Genie names as well as over 100 gigabytes of content from the Genie service. IDT said content will be incorporated into its recently introduced Genie Interactive service, a new online service designed to compete with America Online Inc and CompuServe Corp.
