OK, DAY ONE in Salt Lake City. BrainShare registration is tomorrow. I was checking into my hotel when I turned and came face-to-face with Dr. Eric Schmidt. Needless to say I was too tongue tied to say anything and the moment past and he was busy with some other folks. So, I went to my room and then headed down to the restaurant for some dinner. On my way, I passed a large room filled with people and someone speaking, it was a meeting of Netware Users International and Dr. Schmidt was making a speech. So I stood in the doorway and listened.... First off, I came in towards the end of the speech part but I gathered this much: - Marketing from Novell WILL become more tangible. - TechShare (a mini-BrainShare) will be coming to 44 cities in the US between May 3 and mid-July [I'm told that the company I work for may be hosting one in NYC, when I know more, I'll let you know] Dr. Schmidt really listens to people because after he was finished there was an informal Q&A session. Several topics were written up by staffers for further discussion including getting the Novell message across to more CEO types and doing more to market Novell products. I wish I had a pen & paper at the time but I was too excited. I have to say, he's very personable and very keen on where Novell is going. He did take a pot shot at MSFT when discussing Cisco's new found fondness for NDS (he claimed there's a group in Cisco that LOVES NDS and is doing more than he could say to promote NDS). Also, there was some talk about e-commerce but that was more akin to Novell products and not Digital Me. Another topic I remember was something someone called SchoolNet. They want to develop tools to make NetWare the networking OS of choice in K-12 schools across America. Anyway, that's all I remember. There were other topics discussed but most of them focused on getting to the end-user. Dr. Schmidt said that Novell's only goal now is to get Novell on the end-user's mind so I think we'll see some interesting things from this company in terms of marketing. In fact, he pointed to what MSFT has done with JUST marketing! Peter Strifas
