SirVinny, fully agree with you and WB about mutual funds, with one exception. Index funds are run by computer, have no loads, no 12b1 charges, and management fees of <1/10th of the typical fund. It's a superb way for novices and people who can't study the markets to participate in the growth of the blue chips. I believe Vanguard's s&p500 index fund, vfinx, is the best of the lot - it has returned 24.05%/yr. over the past 5 years versus 24.13% for the s&p500.

One confirmation of the value of index funds is that no broker will ever recommend one!
