You're right, and that thing many people don't understand is that in many rural places the bar or tavern is a substitute for the general store or cafe as a meeting place. Also in the west there is not the stigma attached to being in a bar during the day as there might be in other areas of the country. The regulars used the bar as a place to meet and do business and are just as likely to be drinking coffee at 1 in the afternoon as boilermakers. When there is a foot of snow on the ground, it's ten below and the rancher has done his morning chores by 9 a.m. the local bar is an ideal place to talk to his neighbors, the closest of which might live ten miles away. Also in times of emergency the bar often turns into a 'command center' when the nearest town of any size might be 100 miles away. I've seen some rural bars stocked with enough emergency and vet supplies to last through the winter. The people living in these areas have to rely upon one another; up until the last couple of years or so 911 wasn't even available to them, let alone an option. These people have to know what to do if the hot water heater blows up at 3 in the morning and the nearest plumber and volunteer fire dept. are 2 hours away. In the rural bar there are no actors,....no heros....only real people as class/caste melt away. The person next to you with sheep dip on his boots and chaff in his hair may very well own 100,000 acres....as may the person on the other side of you be waiting for the next freight out of town; all pretensions are left at the door when you enter. If one wishes to learn of the local culture go park in a rural bar and sip soda water for a day, it willl be a real eye opener.
