Absolutely John, And the task of personal preparedness is undermined by those who "fear-monger" and predict the end of the world. Let's face it, most of our friends and family look at us like we're half-crazed when we talk about Y2K. Some journalists have found great copy in citing and ridiculing those who continue to discuss financial collapse, depression, major warfare breaking out around the world... etc. And it has made it harder for people to convince others to take the most basic preparatory steps. That's why I take issue with Ken's approach in detailing that it's too late, too.....etc, etc. He has no more CERTAIN and DOCUMENTED evidence for serious disruptions occurring in 2000, than do those who claim there will be few or no problems whatsoever. No one knows what's exactly going to happen, not even our gov't leaders. I'm not asking people to dismiss outright the worst case scenarios, but I think we need folks to have 2-3 months worth of staples (enough to get them through the winter), which should permit the government agencies, local and national, enough time to get their act together, establishing an effective relief effort for those areas most affected. And most of all, we need to spread confidence through the community grapevine, that no matter how severe the problem, or how much government leadership came short of being fully honest, we can eventually fix or work around any problems that transpire. We need to make it clear to everyone we know that panicking and getting hysterical, or permitting that feeling of defeatism to pervade our community, only makes the situation tougher. It may sound cliche', but those of us who have studied the history of WW2 and how that society mobilized to meet the challenge of fighting a global conflict, are often amazed at how Americans were able to roll up their sleeves and get to work in order to support the effort. Be a part of the solution, not the problem. And John... I want to express my appreciation for all of the great research and links to Y2K oriented news that you have provided. Unlike myself and others, you normally just put it out there for people to digest for themselves, without any bias. You've been out there helping us all out with research, while staying above the fray of the day to day verbal brawling. (I'm sure that has been very difficult to do... :0). Thank you. Regards, Ron
