I'll bet you could learn. There are classes at most YMCAs, and dive shops. Getting certified is pretty simple, if you really like the idea.

Once you are certified, it's a simple step to go diving anywhere you want to. My only suggestion would be to have a buddy with you, i.e. spouse, friend, etc. if you dive outside the U.S., and not to trust a buddy from the local dive shop where you are on vacation.

It's kinda like riding a motorcycle or jumping out of an airplane. You'll know right away if you like it or not. If you do, you will really enjoy it. It's kinda like an EVA on the spacecraft, only with huge deadly fish.

A couple of years ago as I realized my life was almost over (50 looming ominously ahead, motherhood winding down along with my hormones) I decided to spit in the eye of old age and got certified.
It was not that difficult- and the training was much harder than diving on cruises or at resorts where they do everything except breathe for you on dives.
I lied about physical problems on the application though- if you tell them you have heart or asthma troubles, you have to jump through hoops getting medical releases, and doctors don't want to sign those because then they think they can get sued. SO I lied.
Somewhere on some other threads, I wrote about it- how I refused to remove my air-one of the tests- and had an underwater fight with the instructor-I'll see if I can find them.
Ish, I'm so glad I did it- just like I'm glad I went rock climbing with the kids and horseback riding in Mexico even though I may be unable to walk for a day or two afterward. SOmetimes I start believing in my own mortality, view myself as winding down, and doing these things, surviving, even succeeding, helps me realize it ain't over-and maybe I am immortal.

Ish,
I strongly recommend that if you go on a vacation where there is diving, to go through the resort dive program. This is a half day class and then highly supervised open water dives. This way you get to see if you like diving without the full commitment. I would stick with reputable firms in mainstream resort towns (Caymens and Hawaii are great...avoid Jamaica resort dives IMO).

I'm enough of a diving nut that I will actually do shore dives through the California surf.
